What this means
You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
Under the following terms:
- Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.
- NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.

Marker text and copyright
The text inscribed on historic markers is documented here for research and preservation purposes. We do not claim copyright over the original marker text; we record it as it exists in the world.
In many cases, marker text may be in the public domain, particularly for older markers or those created by government agencies. Copyright status varies by jurisdiction and marker, though. When in doubt, treat marker text as you would any quotation: attribute it and use it fairly.
Per-contribution overrides
Some contributors may choose to license their photographs under different terms. When a contribution has a specific license, it will be noted on that marker’s page.
Data export
We believe in open data. Bulk export is still in development, and our goal is to make the full archive available for research and preservation. Contact us if you have specific data needs.
