Pioneer Square

Pioneer Square is Seattle’s original downtown and one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. The area was the heart of the city until the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, after which it was rebuilt with the distinctive Romanesque Revival architecture that defines it today.

The square itself—a small triangular plaza—contains several notable monuments and markers, including the famous Pioneer Building, a totem pole, and the ornate iron pergola that has sheltered generations of Seattleites.
